abstract: Large corpus of evidence concerning social processes indicates that one's emotional state may be affected not only by his or her actual state but also by one's relative state as compared to others. The emotional reactions to the success or failure of others can vary greatly towards different people as well as towards the same person. When another person experiences a failure or success, our emotional reaction can take various courses: it can range from feeling envious about the other's possessions, or feeling empathy toward someone in distress, to feeling pleasure at seeing an arrogant leader fall. Here we show that when facing a social agent’s emotional or mental state, four types of emotional reactions may emerge: envy, schadenfreude, negative empathy (or sympathy, pity) or positive empathy (happy for). The lecture will focus on the neuroanatomical and biological bases of envy and schadenfreude using a framework of social comparison based emotions. It is proposed here that two main processes underlie the experience of social comparison based emotions: The first is the reward/punishment system mediating motivation and the experience of pleasure and displeasure. The second is the mentalizing system which processes the intentions and mental states of others’. Hence, an interaction between the mentalizing and the reward systems is proposed to be at the heart of the experience of social comparison based emotions.
פרופ' סימון שמאי צורי היא ניורופסיכולוגית החוקרת את הבסיס המוחי של רגש והתנהגות חברתית. פרופ' מן המניין בחוג לפסיכולוגיה באוניברסיטת חיפה (ראש המגמה לנוירופסיכולוגיה קלינית). מחקריה עוסקים בהבנה של מנגנונים מוחיים אשר מתווכים רגש והתנהגות חברתית מורכבת כמו אמפתיה והתנהגות פרוסוציאלית באוכלוסיות בריאות ובאוכלוסיות עם פתולוגיות כגון סכיזופרניה ואוטיזם. בנוסף, מחקריה עוסקים ברגשות הקשורים להשוואה חברתית כמו קנאה ושמחה לאיד ובבסיס הביולוגי של הרגשות הללו. מאמריה התפרסמו בכתבי עת מובילים בעולם בתחום הפסיכיאטריה הנוירולוגיה והנוירופסיכולוגיה. היא זכתה במספר פרסים
ד"ר נורית נוביס דויטש היא פסיכולוגית של הדת, הזהות והמוסר. לאחרונה שבה מברקלי, קליפורניה שם היתה עמיתת פולברייט במכון להתפתחות האדם ומרצה אורחת בחוג לפסיכולוגיה באוניברסיטת ברקלי, שם לימדה על הפסיכולוגיה של הזהות הישראלית, הפסיכולוגיה של הדת, זכרון יהודי קולקטיבי ודתיות בישראל. מחקריה הנוכחיםי עוסקים במפגש בין זהות דתית וחשיבה פלורליסטית בקרב יהודים דתיים אמריקניים וישראלים, וכן במימדים קוגניטיביים ורגשיים של תהליכי יצירת-משמעות בקרב דתיים. מחקריה הקודמים שפורסמו בכתבי עת שונים עסקו בספרות הדרכה לזוגיות בחברות דתיות נוצריות ויהודיות, בקשר בין דפוסי זהות ופתיחות לאחר, בחשיבה פלורליסטית אצל ילדים ובזהותם של מטפלים דתיים. נורית מלמדת בחוג להתפתחות האדם באוניברסיטת חיפה, וכן באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
