Michal Ayalon is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics Education in the University of Haifa, Israel. She completed her Ph.D. in mathematics education at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel (argumentation), and post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford (international comparative research). Her research interests include argumentation; formative assessment; mathematics teacher education; and interrelationships between curriculum, task design, teaching, and students' learning of functions.

Michal is currently directing the funded HAKLIM-5 project at the University of Haifa, focusing on the use of 'critical events' as a tool for the professional development of prospective secondary-school mathematics teachers. In the past, she has directed the M-TET (Math Teachers Edit Textbooks) project and the Mesimatica project for developing formative assessment tasks in mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Michal is the Head of the committee for teaching certificate in mathematics and a member of various committees at the Department of Education in the University of Haifa.

Michal has published in multiple international journals. She is a member of the editorial boards of theInternational Journal of Science and Mathematics Education,Journal of Teaching Mathematics and its Applications, Ale –Journal for Mathematics Teachers (in Hebrew), andMispar Hazak (in Hebrew). She has served as a member of the Jerusalem Conference of Research in Mathematics Education (JRCME) committee and the chair of the JCRME 5 in 2017. She has twice led the International conference on formative assessment tasks in mathematics in the Weizmann Institute of Science and served as a co-chair of the working group on formative assessment in the 11^th conference of the International Society for Design and Development in Education (ISDDE). Currently she serves as a co-leader of the working group on Formative Assessment in the Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME).
