With an academic background in both perceptual learning and attention and assistive technologies in the field of human-computer interaction, Dr. Szpiro and her team are exploring innovative ways that new technologies can help people with learning disabilities and poor vision.\u00a0<\/p><p>The team&#8217;s goal is to impact life outside of the lab. To do this, team members characterize the real-world challenges people with disabilities face in order to develop the most effective assistive technologies (from shopping, mobility, visiting a museum, and identifying facial expressions). They are using augmented reality, eye tracking, voice and sound technologies to develop new technologies that improve real life challenges. Most recently, their research has focused on people with low vision.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Lab is also examining the interaction of processes in visual perception, attention and learning and how these develop across the lifespan. Team members are testing whether and how perceptual plasticity processes differ in typical populations and people with disabilities. Our goal is to understand how cognitive and brain capacities such as plasticity, attention, and memory can enhance visual perception in both typical and atypical populations \u2013 e.g. people with autism, visual impairments, and learning disabilities. We focus on different phases of skill learning, from initial acquisition (online learning) to memory consolidation (offline learning). A major part of our research is also dedicated to understand the learning mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of speech and language-related skills, and specifically how these processes might be affected in developmental dyslexia. A related line of research concerns adaptive plasticity of speech among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. A major part of our research is also dedicated to understand the learning mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of speech and language-related skills, and specifically how these processes might be affected in developmental dyslexia. A related line of research concerns adaptive plasticity of speech among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. It is a meeting place for researchers and students for discussion and guidance and allows student teachers studying for a teaching certificate in Mathematics to begin to link theory and practice.<br \/>The laboratory enables and encourages projects in the field of teaching and learning Mathematics.
