The Emotion Lab

The Emotion Lab studies the ways in which emotion, attention and cognitive control shape human behavior and experience.\u00a0 We use a combination of behavioral, psychophysiological and brain imaging methods to understand adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation processes.\u00a0 We study basic emotion regulation mechanisms and design cognitive interventions with the aim to improve emotion regulation among healthy and clinical populations.<\/p>

Dr. Sarit Szpiro’s research is focused on finding new ways to enhance people’s abilities with training and technology. With an academic background in both perceptual learning and attention and assistive technologies in the field of human-computer interaction, Dr. Szpiro and her team are exploring innovative ways that new technologies can help people with learning disabilities and poor vision.\u00a0<\/p>

The team’s goal is to impact life outside of the lab. To do this, team members characterize the real-world challenges people with disabilities face in order to develop the most effective assistive technologies (from shopping, mobility, visiting a museum, and identifying facial expressions). They are using augmented reality, eye tracking, voice and sound technologies to develop new technologies that improve real life challenges. Most recently, their research has focused on people with low vision.\u00a0<\/p>

The Lab is also examining the interaction of processes in visual perception, attention and learning and how these develop across the lifespan. Team members are testing whether and how perceptual plasticity processes differ in typical populations and people with disabilities. Their methods include psychophysics, eye tracking, and computational models to reveal how our brain learns to process new perceptual information.<\/p>

The Yashar Lab investigates visual perception and cognition, particularly, the processes, which determine how people detect and identify visual features and objects. Our goal is to understand how cognitive and brain capacities such as plasticity, attention, and memory can enhance visual perception in both typical and atypical populations \u2013 e.g. people with autism, visual impairments, and learning disabilities. We use various research methods, including psychophysics, eye tracking, and computational modeling.<\/p>

The Cognitive Development Lab focuses upon elucidating the way developmental mechanisms drive changes in visual cognition, how those changes are refined by visual experience, the way in which the visual system is able to recover from some perturbation and the limits to plasticity. \"LanguageResearch in our lab focuses on cognitive aspects of skill learning and its breakdown in neurodevelopmental disorders. We focus on different phases of skill learning, from initial acquisition (online learning) to memory consolidation (offline learning). A major part of our research is also dedicated to understand the learning mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of speech and language-related skills, and specifically how these processes might be affected in developmental dyslexia. A related line of research concerns adaptive plasticity of speech among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. To this end, our work combines different disciplines such as cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and speech perception.<\/p>

The Laboratory’s objectives are to support the development and instruction of Mathematics in school. The Laboratory supports researchers, students of Mathematics education, graduate students, Mathematics teachers, and student teachers of special education and learning disabilities that focus on mathematical education, by engaging them in up to date research on the effective teaching of Mathematics, and promotes communication between academia and the field.
The laboratory provides suitable space for individual encounters with teaching materials and for teaching courses that uses these materials. It is a meeting place for researchers and students for discussion and guidance and allows student teachers studying for a teaching certificate in Mathematics to begin to link theory and practice.

The researchers who are partners in the center come from the fields of psychology, neuropsychology, medicine and computer science. Our goal is to understand how cognitive and brain capacities such as plasticity, attention, and memory can enhance visual perception in both typical and atypical populations \u2013 e.g. people with autism, visual impairments, and learning disabilities. The Cognitive Development Lab focuses upon elucidating the way developmental mechanisms drive changes in visual cognition, how those changes are refined by visual experience, the way in which the visual system is able to recover from some perturbation and the limits to plasticity. We study perceptual process in typically developing children, children with abnormal visual history and children and adults who are diagnosed with autism.<\/p>

\"LanguageResearch in our lab focuses on cognitive aspects of skill learning and its breakdown in neurodevelopmental disorders. We focus on different phases of skill learning, from initial acquisition (online learning) to memory consolidation (offline learning). A major part of our research is also dedicated to understand the learning mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of speech and language-related skills, and specifically how these processes might be affected in developmental dyslexia. A related line of research concerns adaptive plasticity of speech among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. To this end, our work combines different disciplines such as cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and speech perception.<\/p>

The Laboratory’s objectives are to support the development and instruction of Mathematics in school. The Laboratory supports researchers, students of Mathematics education, graduate students, Mathematics teachers, and student teachers of special education and learning disabilities that focus on mathematical education, by engaging them in up to date research on the effective teaching of Mathematics, and promotes communication between academia and the field.
The laboratory provides suitable space for individual encounters with teaching materials and for teaching courses that uses these materials. It is a meeting place for researchers and students for discussion and guidance and allows student teachers studying for a teaching certificate in Mathematics to begin to link theory and practice.
The laboratory enables and encourages projects in the field of teaching and learning Mathematics. For several years, the project of the Ministry of Education’s National Center for Mathematics teachers in primary education takes place in the Laboratory.<\/td><\/tr>
